The Open Academic Sideletter
Exploring academia’s fine print: reflections on academic careers, inequality and institutional culture.
The Open Academic Sideletter grew out of a simple observation: many of the challenges that shape academic careers are widely experienced but rarely discussed openly.
Academia is often idealised as a world of intellectual discovery and achievement. Yet many researchers encounter precarious employment, inequality, discrimination and institutional barriers that remain largely absent from formal training and mentoring structures.
The Open Academic Sideletter is an independent public scholarship initiative that brings together experiences, reflections and practical resources on academic careers. It aims to make the often invisible structures of academic life more transparent and to create space for conversations that frequently take place only informally.

Why it matters
Many of the most consequential aspects of academic life are communicated through informal advice, personal networks or trial and error. The Sideletter brings these questions into the open without reducing them to individual success or failure.
It is intended for researchers who are just beginning their academic careers, those navigating mid-career transitions, and those considering paths beyond academia.
